On Sunday I got to print the blocks pictured above at Big Wheel Press in Northampton, MA. Ali Osborn did the printing, but I would try and help him by holding the finished prints and I made a lousy attempt at mixing my ink colors. The print will be a part of a print portfolio that I will share more about at a later date. The other artists involved are....

I am leaving next week for North Carolina for the first two weeks of March to do some work at Elsewhere Artist Collaborative in Greensboro. I am collaborating with Mary Rothlisberger and J.W. Gamble we have been commissioned to make the artist-in-residence residences more hospitable. I am excited to go back to Elsewhere it has been almost four years.

Maybe when I am there or when I come home I will tell you why I love Elsewhere and think that is an important institution in the current American climate.

There has been no snow here and it has been so warm (in the 50's today). Is it going to be a very dry spring (drought)? How thick are the ticks and mosquitoes going to be this year? Things are sprouting and syrup is flowing. It makes me a bit uncomfortable (maybe I shouldn't be?). I have been told the air currents are flowing further north this year keeping the cold air over Canada, but for some reason it isn't making me feel any better.

I am a part of a book curated by Alex Moore and Emily Smith called Articulate. I received my copy Monday and have been enjoying going through it.

From Alex Moore’s introduction to the book:

“With its rigid steel back, and conveniently included washcloth, this art book would fit nicely between the canned food and the matches in a home emergency kit. Preparedness is important when living in the contemporary landscape: as expressed by one artist, this is “a very safe city, except for the part that’s on fire.” The unacknowledged fire may be the repressed sexuality of men kept in the closet by society’s continuing homophobia, the ecological damage we continue to repackage for consumption, or the intrusive reality of protesters being killed in a far away land. Or it could be the literal truth that, fairly often, Los Angeles is on fire. Whatever the danger is, many of the works in this collection articulate a struggle to make a home in its presence."

Articulate is the second collaborative book project curated by Alex and Emily.

On Sunday I went on a trip to the Museum of Natural History in Providence, RI. The main impetus of the trip was to see the exhibition Curiouser that Victore Signore (a friend and local artist) has work in. The piece he has in the show is a reiteration of the amazing untitled (Dream Wall) that he had done in the 2009 show Call and Response.

He was wonderful with very square teeth.
He has a lot of information and a lot of care.
He has a license to pick up and freeze dry roadkill.
He took our picture with a bear.

The sewing machine pictured above's owner passed away last year. I never met her. I am told she sewed all her own clothing and curtains. Her son was in charge of going through her belongings. I have received this beautiful machine. I am trying to figure out how to run it as a treadle without electricity.

Maybe you know about SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect IP Act) already because it has been all over the news. There are so many other places on the internet right now to read about the language involved in the bills (reddit is comprehensive).

I just want to make a little comment:
I have been thinking about how exciting all of the clashing and questioning of the bills' language has been. The new space that the Internet has created in our culture is redefining freedom and expression and consumption. It has been good for me to think about how I use the internet, what I want from it, and what kind of responsibilities I have to it and to others while using it. I find it also interesting how there seems to be a clashing of old power structures with newer ones and what does that mean going forward. Who has what skills and information and how the internet changes the playing field. The bills have been put on hold for modification it will be interesting to see how the language changes when they come back around.
Who is going to have say in the changes?
Will lawmakers go to internet training seminars in the meantime?

On Friday morning I found this wing, it fell out of one of the bags of yarn I was packing. I am amazed that it stayed in one piece. We are rough on the yarn. It is piled into bags and stacked into carts, and then un-bagged, counted, and then repackaged up for shipping. Later in the day I found a bee in a bag of yarn and the bee was in one piece.

On Saturday night Alicia Renadette opened up the unoccupied apartment downstairs from hers for people to come and view a multi-room installation she has been working on for the past couple of months. In some ways this apartment was the perfect place for her work to present itself at this time.

I have seen Alicia’s work in galleries before and have always been excited and pulled in by the pieces. Her current work I see as bodies of decay and/or growth trying hard to present themselves as beautiful and restrained beings to the viewer. But at some point it becomes apparent that since they are beings in a state of flux they are leaking innards in front of everyone and can’t control it (maybe don’t even want to control it). In a gallery this makes them a little pathetic and a little bit frightening.

These beings that feel exposed in the gallery were decidedly in charge of the apartment and leaked as they liked. The pieces found their spots in the apartment and grew into the architecture. They spread out in their different rooms and attended to their own processes in front of company unabashedly.

Gallery A3 will be celebrating its' 10 year anniversary in January with a group show. I was a member of the gallery in 2004 and will be apart of the show with 49 other former and current members.

December 2, 3, and 4 is the 25th annual Open Studio at Cottage Street Studios. Joshua Vrysen and I will have our studio open this weekend along with many other great artists who are in the building.

Joshua and my studio is #3-32 located on the third floor "C" side. This year I will be selling fabric and buttons (see pictures above) along with some stuffed guys shadow boxes and drawings. Joshua will have books and drawings for sale. I will also be showing the video "come over, come over" 2010 and portable doll fort 2007 - 2011.

I have a show up now at Springfield College called "I Will Swallow It". Below is the statement from the show and more information. I will post pictures and write a little more about the work in my next post.

The space that we built to protect ourselves we have decided to break it apart. It will do us good to move out of this place. We have stewed in our own juices long enough.

“I Will Swallow It” is the sixth installment in a series called “All the Trappings”. The characters involved in this body of work have been trying to find a home for themselves by constructing fortified spaces out of cardboard, textiles, collaged imagery from shopping catalogs, and found and homemade objects. The spaces end up being isolating neurotic boxes of great pleasure and disgust.

The structure “I Will Swallow It” seems to be the beginning of a change in direction for these characters. The structure seems to have been opened up and is in the process of being dismantled or maybe it is being reconfigured.

These baby slippers I submitted for "Art-i-facts: An Unconventional History of MCAD". The show is in conjunction with MCAD's (Minneapolis College of Art and Design) 125 anniversary. Kerry Morgan, the director of the MCAD gallery, asked alumni to submit a single object or expression that would best represent one's experience while in school.

When I moved to Minneapolis in August of 2005 it was to start the MFA program at MCAD. I had never been to Minneapolis before. Luckily I had met a really lovely woman named Megan earlier in the year in Vermont who lived in Minneapolis with her boyfriend. They were kind enough to let me sleep in there living room for a couple of weeks while I looked for a place to live. Other than Megan I didn't know anybody else in the city. I would bike around Lake Harriet for hours and then I would bike up and down the alleys looking in trash bins for stuff. I moved out to Minnesota with one suitcase so I was trying to find materials to work with in the studio and housewares. I found so much stuff. Most of it I didn't take, sometimes I would just look. I remember three trash bins from this time in particular: the wiglets/smutty book/giant Garfield head pillow, an empty dumpster except for a huge birthday party bag filled with baby sleepers and dresses, and an overflowing dumpster filled with the life items of a couple moving out of the country (where these slippers came from).

I had visited the dumpster once and didn't take anything because I was afraid it was someone's who had been evicted from their apartment and I didn't want to take what could very well still belong to someone. But I decided to go back the next day because there was so much. This time a woman came up to me in the alley so I asked her if she knew what was going on. She said that the stuff was hers and that she and her partner were (and I assume still are) musicians and had decided to move to Mexico. They couldn't take much with them so they donated some things but still had to throw so much away. She said she would be very happy for me to take as much from the pile as I wanted. At this time I still was looking for a place to live so I couldn't take too much. I took the slippers, the woman's baby book, a notebook, and a blue cotton shift with strawberries embroidered on the yoke.

These slippers I keep pinned to the wall of my studio. I have always wanted to "do something" with them but have felt funny because in some ways I feel they are not mine to do anything with.

Yesterday I went to Intuit - The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art.

The image above labeled "07.27.2011 Calvin Black" is from the show "You Better Be Listening: Text in Self-Taught Art". I was excited about this sign and wondered what it was for, luckily the Intuit provides a lot of information on their didactic plaques. I learned that Calvin and his wife Ruby ran a rock shop in the Mojave Desert. In 1954 they started building Possum Trot as a way to attract customers. They created animated displays that ran off of wind power. Calvin carved over 80 life size dolls that each had their own function and personality. Ruby sewed their clothing. He would put on shows with them in the "Bird Cage Theater".
Today I watched Possum Trot: The Life and Work of Calvin Black, 1903-1972. I couldn't have imagined what their home looked like, it was way more than I had thought. Calvin got the wood to carve the dolls from telephone poles that had been knocked down by car accidents. Many of the dolls are based on friends and all the dolls have name tags. The documentary was filmed after Calvin had passed away and Ruby is alone taking care of Possum Trot.

The Intuit also houses the remaining contents of Henry Darger's home space in Chicago. The exhibit is permanent and houses his furniture, personal items, one of his typewriters, bundled stacks of coloring books, magazines, other paper source material, and his cakes of paint. On the Intuit's website you can take a virtual tour of the room by scrolling down to the second image on the page.

I saw this piece a couple of weeks ago at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford, CT. I have been thinking about it a lot. It is one of two videos in the show from Gladwell's "MADDESTMAXIMVS" series. The figure dressed in black is holding the corpse of a kangaroo that had been struck by a vehicle. Everything is slow and looks hot. When there are big trucks that go by in the video it feels like they are never going to pass. I sat a long time with this video. I wonder how the kangaroos smelt. The figure in black shoos away the flies and picks up the kangaroo. Each time is as deliberate and careful as the time before. The kangaroo is brought to the middle of the road they pause, the figure in black leans in closer to the kangaroo and then they drift off screen to the right.

"Gladwell's Apologies refers most strongly to contemporary Australian issues - the destruction and deforestation of the land in the name of progress. Even more, through interaction with the kangaroo, Gladwell symbolically apologizes to the indigenous peoples of Australia who were mistreated under colonization." - Patricia Hickson, Emily Hall Tremaine Curator of Contemporary Art

This piece was presented by Gladwell for the 2009 Venice Biennale a year after the Australian government issued a formal apology to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island families.

Last Friday July 8th was the reception for "And In One Another: A Massive Collaborative Sketchbook Project". About 60 artists were each given a blank sketchbook and over the course of 60 days 30 prompts were sent out and used by the artists to respond to in the books (loosey goosey of course). I was exited to see where there were overlaps and differences in the interpretations of the prompts in the books and in relation to my own book.

It was really overwhelming but nice to sit down in a packed room and explore the books with blaring music and wet summer heat. The work took center stage, everybody had a book or was looking over someone's shoulder.

If the books go to a different venue I will let you know (before, not after they are packed away).

I went to see the Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty show at The Metropolitan Museum of Art about a month ago. I am still processing it.

I went on a rainy Saturday so it was very crowded, we were in line for an hour and a half to get into the exhibition. Sound terrible? Actually it was kind of nice and interesting. The line winds through the museum so you get to see a selection from the museum's collection that is from various points in history and cultures, kind of a mash-up in the brain.

The Savage Beauty website will give you far better content than I can provide you here about McQueen and his work. If you can't go see the show I would suggest spending time with the website.

I have been thinking a lot about Dress, No. 13. It kind of encapsulates my love/love/hate of fashion.

The robots are jizzing all over the model and she isn't sure and she is not fighting back and she takes it and lays down for all to see at the end.
But the dress looks super awesome and the show was exciting (if not triggering for some). The spray paint treatment on the fabric looks pretty sweet in person.

McQueen was able to combine amazingly constructed pieces of fashion with amazingly constructed runways shows. Everything he says he was interested in and trying to convey in the work is there and it is still there years later.

On maybe a more boring note I really like how the Met designed the exhibition.

Two weekends ago I participated as an artist mentor in the Massachusetts' Arts All-State held at the Worcester Art Museum. This is my third time. It is an interesting experience that every time it is so different. My mentor partner this year was David Shapleigh.

Arts All-State is a 36 hour intensive program where a pair of artist mentors work with a group of 18 juniors in high school (they don't know each other ahead of time and come from all over Massachusetts) to create a large scale installation. Each group is given a studio space and only three materials to work with (two of the materials are chosen ahead of time by the artist mentors and one material is a surprise).

Here is a great blog put together by Kristi Oliver the current chairperson of Massachusetts' Arts All-State at the Worcester Art Museum. Kristi documented each of the studios and uploaded pictures on the blog. The studio I worked with is number 202.

This week assignments for "& In One Another", sketchbook project began. Organized by Katherine Romansky and Adria Sutter, 50-60 participants are given a sketchbook (hand bound with a silkscreen cover). Every other day a phrase is sent by text or email to participants for the next month. This is the second year of the project. I am excited to participate and see how we all respond to the same words/ideas.

The world is chaotic and slippery: the solid ground beneath our feet is not solid but moving; the body standing on this ground is problematic; and the fact or fiction of this moment can and does blur in recall and in the invention of a new story. As artists, we make the concession that our attempts at creating order are fallible, but keep going anyway. To paraphrase Proust: an unfailing world doesn’t yield incentive for fruitful investigations. This moment of unbalance is good; each of us uses this uncertainty as motivation to study and create worlds of our own. These worlds act as substitutions, stand-ins or places to find temporary order.

Our artworks also share an interest in saturation: a tendency towards decoration through pattern, layers of color, information and fragmentation, whether it be work that is printmaking or paper-based or performative in nature. Melissa Wagner-Lawler works with printmaking and gouache and at times includes embroidered text and cutouts. Angela Zammarelli uses fabric, cardboard, and herself to make sculptural objects and installations. In my work I use printmaking, papermaking, drawing, and sewing to make small size works to large-scale paper based installations.

The characters are separate from me. They are formed from a variety of parameters. Many of them are from histories in spaces that are not my own combined with characteristics found in myself magnified. They are living in a space separate from that which I live everyday. I have been saying this for about a year; their function and formation are shifting, maybe becoming less fantastical and more pathetic.

The character involved in "All the Trappings" is insulating itself with images of stuff and consuming frozen french fries. I guess I will use the pronoun she, she will have a pal with her that is a doll that will be a similar size to herself. The "ask me about it later" part of the title comes from this place of my not completely understanding this character but feeling really compelled to share her before she is formed. I started to work with her in Omaha. She is not involved with the world the other characters inhabit but I would say she is related.

I was in Providence, RI on Sunday and came across a documentary by David Bettencourt called You Must Be This Tall: The Story of Rocky Point Park. I had gone to Rocky Point Park as a child and my dad use to go all the time when he was a kid. The park was located in Warwick, RI and closed in 1996. The film interviewed local historians, former park employees, and people that had enjoyed the park. There was a mix of contemporary footage of the park in shambles and historical pictures and film.

While watching and listening to the interviews I kept feeling like my brain was trying to access a place that it couldn't seem to find. Maybe that doesn't make much sense but it is a feeling I get often when I think about places that at one time had a prominent and specific function and then decay and finally get torn down. Is this nostalgia? It is not always with happy places or times. I think there is a worry about forgetting things for better or worse. Histories that had happened, the space that it happened in. Is this backwards?

If you are in Minneapolis this weekend MCAD will be holding the annual Art Sale (it starts tomorrow). I have some work that will be up for sale and there are lots and lots of other art pieces by artists that go and have gone to MCAD. The walls of the first and second floor are packed with photos, paintings, drawings, sculptures, and so much. It is a sight to be seen.

I had this dream last week where I was sitting at a table with 5 other people, I can't tell or I don't remember who they are. A crow is sitting in the middle of the table and starts to come towards me. It is getting ready to peck my face off. A hawk swoops down from over the shoulder of the person sitting across from me, body checks the crow away from my face and then brushes its beak against my cheek which I interpreted as a kiss. I woke up thinking it had happened because I had felt the hawks beak against my cheek.

I have been making little shadow boxes from the wooden packaging that my former boss Djerba had given to me this summer. I have decided to call them sketches under the body of work "All the Trappings". The image at the top of this post is sketch #4. If you would like to see more of them I have posted them here. The boxes use to house dolls. I like to think about the boxes as rooms between rooms in a building. A doll house?

I have been going through the archives of This American Life again while at work. Yesterday I listened show #146 Urban Nature from 1999. I got particularly excited over David Rakoff's piece.

Act One. Interpretation Of
Dreams.

Building everything that comprises modern life—constructing cities and suburbs both—means trampling nature. And that bothers some people. They want to keep nature at hand, even in the city. David Rakoff visited Reykjavik, Iceland, where the government is careful not to disturb certain boulders when it builds roads because some people believe that invisible "hidden people"—like elves—live at those sites. (17 minutes)

The part of the piece I have been thinking about when Rakoff talks about the
urban Reykjaviks' belief or wanting to believe in the stories of the "hidden
people".

the yearning quality of the stories. These tales are the vestiges of a
pre-urban time. Urbanization is intrinsically a violent process. It elicits a terrified nostalgia and possibly guilt. We hold fast to what we feel we are destroying.

Currently I work in the shipping department of a very large yarn store. Yesterday while I was filling an order for a Rita Peters I found it had a mistake. In order to fix it I had to go out into the store section, I rarely do this. In the store at this time happened to be my aunt's best friend and her husband, Rita and Peter. I haven't seen them in years. They don't live out here but Rita is an amazing knitter and they were traveling through the area so they made a stop.

For a festive festival I thought I would make a festive chair.

When you sit in the chair the bundle hanging overhead is stuffed with lavender, cloves, mint, raspberry leaves, and rose petals. I was hoping to make a soft soothing tactile and olfactory experience juxtaposed with a more active visual experience.

A couple of weekends ago I went to see Petah Coyne's Everything That Rises Must Converge currently on view at Mass MoCA in North Adams, MA. This is the first time that I have seen a large body of her work in person, and I couldn't believe at how much I was pulled in by the textures and forms of the sculptures. I have only up until recently seen documentation of her work in books and on the internet and was always interested in the way she blends nature, the domestic, art history/history, and the personal. Seeing Coyne's work in person really brought out the the painstaking amount labor and attention to detail in the sculptures that for me pushed the themes she works with further.

The work will be on view through February 2011.

Next Saturday, August 14th, I am participating in AS220's FOO Fest 2010 in Providence, RI. I am so happy to get to participate with an installation. AS220 will be presenting for the first time its' Free Culture Award. This years recipients are Shepard Fairey & Brandon Edenswill. ESG is playing and I am very excited!

AS220 is a non-profit community arts space located in downtown Providence. They are celebrating their 25th anniversary this year. Their mission is "to provide an unjuried and uncensored forum for the arts. If you live in the state of Rhode Island, you will get an opportunity to exhibit or perform at AS220."

Last Thursday I went out to North Adams, MA for Down Street Arts and the opening reception for Be Your Own Placebo (B.Y.O.P.). This is the first installment of a four part summer show curated by Jaime Lee Mohr. The artists in the show are Jessica Ciocci, Sophia Cara Dixon, Celested Dupuy Spencer, Toto Feldman, Megha Gupta, Natalie Purkey, Rose Marcus, Frankie Martin, Lauren Pakradooni, Erika Somogyi, and Jennifer Sullivan. Images from the show can be found here. I am biased towards these artists especially Lauren Pakradooni so I am just going to say go see it if you can.

Also up in North Adams at Gallery 51 is Sean Riley's Everything is OK. The show is a mixture of paintings and quilts. I find his paintings and collages to be really exciting. His quilt tops are nice as images (found on his website), but for some reason when I was looking at them at the show I was having trouble with them as objects. I think that within the context of the show and with the show's title they are interesting but as objects outside of that context I was having strange feelings about them............................................
(Maybe it is because I have been looking at tons of different quilts lately? Am I getting
hung up on craft? They are well sewn. Maybe I was feeling a bit or resentment to the
painting/quilting dichotomy and it was conjuring up thoughts about traditional women's
work/men's work and the history of sexism in the creative realm? Last summer two
women had quilts in a show I co-curated at the same gallery, just to call myself out.)
But I have since learned that he is making the quilt tops out of his father's clothes and I will admit that has made me appreciate them so much more.

I meant to write this before I left Omaha, but it didn't work out that way.

I am now back in Western Mass. I left Omaha on Friday, April 30th. The last week at the Bemis was a flurry of activity, friends, cleaning, moving, packing, and documenting. I am now working with video footage that I recorded while at the Bemis Center and will hopefully have something cohesive to pull together.

Saturday Joshua and I went out to Mass MOCA. Maybe I have said this before, but I love Mass MOCA so much. I love the buildings, I really appreciate and am excited by the work that they exhibit, and I like going out to the Berkshires. I think it may have been the last weekend for the Guy Ben-Ner videos so I was really glad to catch them one more time before they left. Right now in the galleries are Material World, InVisible: Art at the Edge of Perception, and Gravity is a Force to be Reckoned With (Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle). At Kidspace they are celebrating their 10th year anniversary with Delectable Decade: Kidspace Retrospective and You Art What You Eat. And there is the ongoing Sol LeWitt: A Wall Drawing Retrospective.

I instantly was attracted to Orly Genger's Big Boss, which is apart of Material World. It is large, red, and undulating. The piece starts out as neatly stacked large crocheted rope "sheets" that create a wall that breaks through a gallery wall to spill out and create a sea rolling material.

I am very excited because on May 29th Petah Coyne: Everything That Rises Must Converge opens.

Mel Chin Artist Lecture: What Mattered THEN, Matters NOW: Part II Projects compelled by Crisis and Dreams Re-framed

Mel Chin is coming to the Bemis tomorrow. He will be giving an artist talk on Friday and leading a community workshop on Saturday. Chin is coming in conjunction with his Fundred Dollar Bill project and Operation Paydirt.

"The Fundred Dollar Bill Project is raising nationwide awareness of the environmental threat of lead poisoning by collecting the funds necessary for a model remediation effort in New Orleans. Students and community members across the country are currently creating Fundred Dollar Bills -- original, hand-drawn interpretations of $100 bills. Completed Fundred artworks are sent to regional Collection Centers -- that are securely holding the valuable drawings. The project will collect at least 3 million Fundreds, or the equivalent of $300 million, the estimated cost of making the soil in New Orleans lead-safe."

Omaha also has one of the largest residential Superfund sites in the country for lead contamination.

Superfund is the federal government's program to clean up the nation's uncontrolled hazardous waste sites.

It has been many days since the sun has come out here in Omaha. I think I am losing my mind a tad bit.

I didn't mean to look so serious, I was concerned about the camera timer.

A birthday party happened last night, I didn't go. However, I did hear that a pig was roasted. As it was being carried into the house where the party was happening it was dropped on the front steps and exploded. Pig flesh went everywhere and the people dressed as animals were grabbing at the meat and eating it with their hands. The theme of the party was petting zoo. The birthday boy was a pig he has turned 21 today. There were cages and fire eaters. A bare chested man covered in pig grease caught on fire (he is okay, by the by). There was hay in the house, the house did not catch on fire.

I instead stayed in the studio: inside my fort. I spent the night cutting up pictures watching Russel Brand, Eddie Izzard, and French and Saunders on youtube.

Yesterday Heather took Jia-Jen, Jessie, and myself to the Kruger Collection at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. The collection is of miniature furniture that belonged to the late Eloise Kruger. We received a tour from Dianna L Hemsath the curator of the collection. Dianna took us into the room that part of the collection is stored (the other storage site is off campus). The room was filled with cabinets containing furniture and tiny home goods. The cabinets were the ones used by Kruger in her home to store and display.

Eloise Kruger was an accountant who started collecting miniature furniture as a hobby in the late 1930's. It soon became a serious endeavor. As an aside, Kruger had a rough childhood and from a purely speculative place in the car ride home we talked about how interesting it was that she collected miniature domestic objects and would set up her dolls in scenarios and would write little stories about them.

Dianna was saying Eloise Kruger's collection was meticulously documented in regards to provenance probably because she was an accountant. The paper work in regards to the collection filled five large filling boxes. Dianna was saying that when Kruger's collection was donated to the school that also included was her collection of over 800 books covering topics of architecture, historical costume, furniture, construction, and textiles.

Tonight, Thursday, March 4th Jia-Jen Lin and I will be presenting our work for the Bemis Center's First Thursday Art Talk. If you happen to be in Omaha the presentations start at 7 PM. The Bemis is located at 12th street and Leavenworth street.

I am coming close to finishing the outside structure of my building (fort/nest). I am excited to start working on the inside.

The Cave - Sean Ward's A Pre-Conscious Space is an installation/performance venue located on the Bemis Center's campus. I just got to go in last week for the first time for a music show. I really love the space. I want to say it is comfortable like sitting in warm water. If you follow the link you can see pictures of it during construction and the finished space.

I have been watching Guy Madden's Careful at least twice a week for the past month. Sometimes I watch it back to back with the commentary on the second time through. My favorite scene right now is when Grigorss spills the candle wax on Count Knotkers' dead mother's face. It makes me so uncomfortable but I also think it is so funny.

Here I am.

Yesterday I stuffed a small batch of balloons with lentils, wool, plastic doll wigs, rope, and pony beads. This is the start of a costume for one of the beings in the story I am working on. The brick structure above is the place that this being will inhabit. I don't know if you noticed but the bricks were around the base of the cardboard structure in images from the last post. I decided that these where two different structures and they house the two characters I am working with separately.

Today I finished with the collage portion of 9 drawings. I have posted images of them here. They are portraits of characters I have been thinking about and some of them are mutations of beings that I have been working with.

I may very well ruin them in the next layer of working.

I am starting to work on a structure and costume (top image 2/10/2010). Hoarder fortification.

Friday afternoon I visited the Durham Museum. The museum is housed in the former Union Station. I received a brief history lesson on Omaha. I didn't know about the Omaha Stockyards and was surprised by the picture of the Stock Exchange building set in the middle of hundreds of livestock pens. The building is now condos. When I walked into the room that housed information on the Stockyards a sensor switched on a recording of a cow mooing, I was startled.

There is a diorama of the 1898 Trans-Mississippi and International. On the wall there is a sample of how the buildings were constructed to look like white marble. The structures where made of wood slats with three layers of plaster and fiber spread over them.

One of my favorite things in the museum was a 3-D black light mural of the Italian section of the city. It was housed in between a trolley car and the wall. When I entered the trolley car and had a seat it looked like I was riding through a neighborhood. The mural was made by Bill Shook.

At the end of the month a new exhibition opens called "Are We There Yet?". There will be dioramas and 30 pedal cars: I will go.

I have been trying to substitute images of objects for hoarding actual objects in my studio (I can tell you it is only working so-so). This weekend I decided to lay out about a quarter of what I have cut out onto pieces of paper.

A rule that I have for myself is that I am not to purchase the magazines. I have to find them or they have to be given to me. This is to, hopefully, diversify what I have in my stock of images. But I will admit that while going through the magazines I tend to gravitate towards the candy colored glossy "girly" shapes and colors.... and to the images of food.

I am a vegetarian but I am so attracted to the images of animal flesh in magazines it is unreal. I don't desire to eat it as much as sit down and stare at it. It is a combination of horror and desire. I always think of Carolee Schneemann's Meat Joy and how it made me so mad the first time I saw it but also how I desired to be naked and have a chicken slapped against my body.

The problem that I am finding with my collection of cut-outs is that I am being a bit fussy about them. I am a little afraid to use them and worried that I might run out of them or not use them to their fullest extent. As a kid I would cut images out of catalogs and newspapers and just staple them right into the wall, my room was covered from floor to ceiling and on the ceiling with cut-outs (my parents let me because I was afraid of the oak walls with their knots that looked like fierce faces). I think that I need to approach my current collection in a similar way otherwise they are just going to keep being tucked away in envelopes and eventually yellow and crumble....we'll see.

On magazine images Isa Newby Gagarin has a collaborative piece up at the Rochester Art Center. Smells Like Teen Spirit is a collaboration with students from the Rochester Art Center on collecting pictures and appropriating them into an artistic book/installation. The show is up until April 11th, 2010 in the Atrium Gallery.

My studio/living space on 2.4.10

Book on Lucas Samaras. I never really read anything about him until now. Feel like this was a mistake on my part and should have read about him a while ago.

Tonight was the Bemis Center's ArtTalk Lecture. Callyann Casteel and Ben Kinsley presented their work.

Callyann creates these incredible costumes/sculptures that are amalgamations of pattern and shape. They are distortions of the figure and many are bound or have layered objects placed upon them. These beings are very large, around 8ft tall. She doesn't have a website at this time so the selection of images at the link I provided is limited in scope compared to the images she showed tonight.

She began and ended her talk with images of the landscape near Eugene Oregon. She and her fiance just moved to Omaha from the Eugene area. She talked about while she was in Oregon she didn't produce a lot of work but instead spent a lot of time hiking and being out in the landscape. She showed pictures that she had taken of the Oregon landscape.

Ben's work is very exciting to me because I am too shy to ever orchestrate anything like it. I find his work funny but also thoughtful. Tonight he talked about three projects: Skagaströnd Yee-Haw!, A Sea-some Medley, and Street with a View

Street with a View was a collaboration with Robin Hewlett. The project injects situations into Google Street View images of Sampsonia Way in Pittsburgh, PA. I recommend going to the website and looking at the google street view.

I am leaving for the Bemis Center in Omaha, Nebraska in the morning. I will be participating in their residency program for the next three months.

ps. The due date for the next round of applications for a residency here is February 28th.
